Ġieħ l-Imġarr

Heritage Malta shall participate in this local event with an exhibition at the Mġarr Local Council.

The exhibition consists of six information panels on the archaeological significance of the prehistoric temple sites of Ta` Ħaġrat and Skorba and other sites which date from later periods, and which contribute to the value that the village of Mġarr has for Malta’s cultural Heritage. The exhibition presents different aspects related to these sites, but focuses mainly on the involvement of the local community and the role it has had, and still has, in managing them.

The exhibition will be open to the public during the official Mġarr Local Council office hours until the 15th April, 2012.

THE ART AND HISTORY OF COUNTING PRAYERS

14/07/2012 - 31/10/2012
THE ART AND HISTORY OF COUNTING PRAYERS

An exhibition of significant and aesthetic value will be publicly launched Saturday July 14th 2012 at the Palazzo de Piro, Mdina, in the newly renovated exhibition rooms retained onsite by the Chapter of the Metropolitan Cathedral, forming an annex to the Cathedral Museum.

The exhibition comprises a rare and stunning collection of rosary beads, Archconfraternity articles dedicated to “Our Lady of the Rosary” and other related liturgical works of art on loan from private and ecclesiastical collections in Malta and kindly made available for viewing, in many cases, for the first time.

Contemplative, meditative and devotional devices have been used throughout history in a variety of spiritual traditions. But it was the Western, Celtic and Sarum Rites that were to develop what is today known as the “Rosary” or “garland of roses”. The Desert Fathers among others of the 3rd to the 5th centuries used knotted ropes or even stone pebbles to count prayers. In Christian Ethiopia prayer sticks were devised and notches were made on staffs used as supports for people standing during long services.  Islamic prayer beads are believed to have derived from Eastern Catholic prayer beads which were divided along a woollen rope every 33 beads.

The Rosary is and remains an important and traditional devotion of the Roman Catholic Church, combining prayer and meditation in sequences called “decades”. The prayers are accompanied by meditation on the Mysteries and events in the life and ministry of Jesus. This traditional Catholic form of the rosary is mostly attributed to Saint Dominic and is depicted in a number of paintings and items on view in the exhibition.

We unreservedly recommend that while on your visit to “The Silent City” of Mdina and to the Palazzo de Piro, in particular, you devote some well- rewarded time to thoughtfully inspect the magnificent display of historical, contemplative and artistic articles on show. The exhibition will be open daily between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m.

Spectacular fireworks displays at the grand harbour on thursday 9th august

Make sure that you pencil Thursday 9th August @ 22 hrs on your diary ……….. as once again you, your friends or your clients can enjoy, the annual spectacular fireworks show, so called “ La Notte Di San Lorenzo” at the Grand Harbour. This pyro musical display will be held on the occasion of the feast of St. Lawrence, Patron Saint of Vittoriosa. This particular night which leads to 10th August – St. Lawrence Day,  is so popular in Italy.  Each year, the Italians await for this particular night which is known as “La Notte di San Lorenzo” to witness the famous shooting stars.  These shooting stars are also known as ““Le Lachrime di San Lorenzo” ……  St Lawrence tears, or else  “Il Fuoci di San Lorenzo” ……… St. Lawrence fire … to symbolise the sufferings of the Saint during his martrdym which happened 1754 years ago,  in the year 258,  on this particular night, at Rome. This particular evening has become one of the most important events in Malta’s pyrothecnic calendar and apart from that, one of the best family outings during these peak Summer nights.  The show is being organised as usual by the 10th August Pyrothecnic Association of Vittoriosa and will be held near the Vittoriosa Regatta Club ( Kalkara Creek). This year’s “La Notte di San Lorenzo” will kick off at 22 hrs.  All those attending are encouraged to reach “Sally Port” at Kalkara Creek where there will be also the sound system from which music which will be accompanying the fireworks displays. Nearby the Vittoriosa Regatta Club there will be special light effects and a small stage from where comperes Ruth Frendo and Dorian Cassar will give a live commentary both in Maltese and even in English. Along the area, as a prelude to the fireworks shows, there will be parades by Tama Tnabar and fire jugglers from 20.15 hrs onwards. The show starts with a traditional bomb salute and immediately after there will be the first pyro musical display.  For this particular part, fireworks will be syncronised to an original song dedicated to St. Lawrence composed by Mro.Philip Vella, lyrics by George Peresso and Ludvig Galea as the main singer.Soon after, the programme continues with the traditional one by one fireworks,  including multi break crackered shells and multi break coloured shells and large spider webs. During this part of the show and even as a prelude from 21 hrs onwards,  there will be band marches by Our Lady of Mount Carmel Band of Balluta.  The Gran Finale will be a large pyro musical display where fireworks will be perfectly sycronised to  classical, rock, reggae and pop music. The pyro musical displays are going to be co-ordinated by the 10th August Fireworks Association in collaboration with Malta Fireworks. The traditional fireworks have been manufactured by Our Lady of Consolation Fireworks Factory of Gudja and Victor Ellul Fireworks. All those attending for this fireworks evening, can reach the venue via Kalkara gate and then first turning on the left.   Nearby to Kalkara Gate there’s also a large parking area – Fortini Football Ground. The eve of the Vittoriosa festa is only a prelude for the festa day which is so beloved by all Vittoriosa residents – 10th August – St. Lawrence Day, on which day the fireworks this year, will be also special……. due to the fact the the Maltese Cardinal Prospero Grech is going to lead the celebrations of Vittoriosa, his native city.
